Transgender Day of Remembrance

Each year, PFLAG joins in honoring the Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), which offers an opportunity for us to gather together and publicly mourn our trans loved ones whose lives were taken by violence and who might otherwise be forgotten.

We encourage everyone to participate in TDOR vigils, including with our local chapters. Find the chapter nearest you and ask how they are honoring the day.

Sadly, 2023 has already seen at least 438 transgender or gender non-conforming people die by violent means, as aggregated by the Trans Remembrance project, created by our friends at National Center for Transgender Equality.

As PFLAG members and supporters–as human beings–it is imperative that we boldly, loudly, and publicly honor those we have lost to anti-trans violence and hate, and speak out against violence anywhere we see it.

The #ReadWithLove Trans and Nonbinary Book List

Ready to #ReadWithLove in support of trans and nonbinary authors? We're wrapping up Transgender Awareness Week by sharing our Read With Love Trans and Nonbinary Book List.

Every trans and nonbinary person's story is their own to share, and no two stories or journeys are the same. Grab one of these great memoirs--including last week's new release, The Risk It Takes To Bloom: On Life and Liberation, by PFLAG family member Raquel Willis--and explore the beautiful diversity of the trans community.

Check out the list, and then check out last week's interview with Raquel Willis from CBS Mornings!

ICYMI: #LovesTakesAction on the Kelly Clarkson Show

Last week, millions of people tuned in for a PFLAG-inspired episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show that centered the stories of transgender people and how love takes action. PFLAG family Jeff and Harleigh Walker were featured, along with Laverne Cox, Trace Lysette, and Patricia Clarkson.

We know that PFLAG National’s work to uplift the voices of transgender people and their loved ones is possible when #LoveTakesAction, as it did throughout this incredibly special episode.

Help the people in your network open their hearts to keep learning with love, to meet trans people and their families and listen to them with love, and to give in support of PFLAG National’s work to ensure every LGBTQ+ person is safe, celebrated, empowered, and loved.

MONICA: a moving--and very PFLAG--new film

In IFC Film's Monica, a woman returns home to care for her ailing mother whom she hasn't seen in years. Starring the ultra-talented Trace Lysette and the always wonderful Patricia Clarkson, this tender portrait of family, forgiveness, and acceptance will move you, empower you, and remind you why the work of PFLAG remains so critically important.

This kind of trans inclusion and representation on film--especially a feature film--is rare, so supporting it with viewership is a great way to let film distributors know that there is always an audience for stories centering our trans loved ones.

Stream the film on your favorite platform, and then read more about Trace Lysette's well-warranted push for Oscar and awards consideration.
