Intent vs. Impact

As a new ally, it’s your worst nightmare: Something you said or did hurt your LGBTQ+ loved one—and you genuinely didn’t mean to! Maybe you intended to say something nice and have no idea why it impacted them in that way.

Instead of getting defensive, try:

  • Acknowledging (rather than minimizing) the impact.
  • Remembering that a gentle correction is not a personal attack, but an opportunity for you to learn how to do better.
  • Apologizing in a way that takes responsibility for the hurt that you caused.

PFLAG x I Changed My Mind: Share Your Story

We’re thrilled to partner with I Changed My Mind to produce a curated collection of stories from diverse individuals who are connected to the LGBTQ+ community or are LGBTQ+ themselves. Through this collaboration, we aim to soften hearts and change minds by highlighting moments when people changed their perspective. Check out a sample episode closely aligned with PFLAG’s mission.

We are currently seeking:

  • Family members: Grandparents, siblings, parents, step-parents, nieces, nephews, or other relatives who have evolved in their understanding of LGBTQ+ issues.
  • Non-family allies: Teachers, coaches, community members, colleagues, or friends who have experienced a personal transformation in their beliefs or attitudes toward sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.

If this sounds like something you’d like to be part of, or if you know someone who would be a great fit, please fill out our short form to share more.

PFLAG Connects: Communities April Meetings

The PFLAG Connects: Communities program provides a safe, virtual, moderated space where people with shared experiences can connect each month. PFLAG National’s current communities gather people of Latino, Black/African American, Asian American and Pacific Islander backgrounds—as well as families with gender-diverse loved ones, grandparents, and dads—to gain support, ask questions, and learn from others who have been through similar experiences.

We also host a Military Community meeting, in partnership with our friends at the Modern Military Association of America (MMAA).

Learn more and check out our upcoming meetings for April.
