Dear Representative, As a PFLAG member and a proud Alabaman that cares about this state, I am deeply concerned about SB184 and HB266, which would bar necessary healthcare treatments for transgender kids like mine. It is important to protect the public from harm, but these bills do exactly the opposite. They criminalize the treatment of transgender people, and in some cases encourages potentially unnecessary medical procedures on intersex children. Legislators in Montgomery need to get out of my doctor’s office and leave medical decisions to be made between my family and our medical providers. “I don’t believe in it,” is not a defense for preventing your child from accessing safe, affirming, and best-practice medical care. When you hear someone say they want to “de-transgender” a person, the word they mean is “de-humanize.” That is exactly what these bills would do to kids by removing access to safe and life-affirming medical care. It is just as clear to parents as it is to the American Academy of Pediatrics that a child already has a strong sense of their gender between the ages of 3 and 5. Working with a doctor closely throughout childhood and puberty to help a transgender child continue to live their authentic and full life is safe, medically sound, affirming—and can be life-saving. I am a parent, and I’m concerned about kids too, but we are in the middle of a pandemic. As your constituent, I urge you to focus on getting people vaccinated, opening schools, and putting our economy back on track. Don't waste time and tax dollars on dehumanizing transgender kids like mine. I love my Alabama home, and I need you to represent all of your constituents, including my gender affirming family. Dear Governor Stitt, As a PFLAG member and a proud Sooner that cares about this state, I am deeply concerned about SB615 and HB1074. SB615 forces school counselors to out children to their parents, regardless of the child's wishes, and bars trans kids like mine from using the bathroom which conforms with their gender identity. HB1074 censors our students' education. Students deserve safety, and instead a committee of grown adults decided that they would take steps to ensure LGBTQ+ like mine are even less safe. When 40% of homeless youth in our state are LGBTQ+, the problem is not the school, it's parents who put their child out on the street. This is potentially life-threatening legislation for students in non-affirming households. Don't take away important safety nets for our kids by making schools less safe for them. Governor Stitt, transgender or not, everyone goes to the bathroom. All students, no matter their race or genders, deserve to live with dignity and respect. The “potty talk” some lawmakers use is meant to sow fear and divide us. We can do better! In fact, schools all around the country, including here in Oklahoma, have let trans kids use the correct restroom for YEARS without incident. Please don't ignore this evidence and deny dignity to trans kids. I love my Oklahoma home, and I need you to represent all of your constituents, including my gender affirming family. These bills, SB184 and HB322, are built on a lie intended to dehumanize people who are transgender. A trans person deserves the right to go to the bathroom. Trans people deserve access to the healthcare they need. It doesn’t get more personal than that. SB184 and HB322 will do nothing to protect the health and well-being of children in Alabama, but by keeping trans kids out of the bathroom with aligns with their gender identity and criminalizing their healthcare treatment, these bills will hurt my kids and kids like them all around this state and, furthermore, will spell out that Alabama is small, backward, and mean-spirited. “I don’t believe in it,” is not a defense for preventing my child from accessing safe, affirming, and best-practice medical care, and barring them from the correct school restrooms. When you hear someone say they want to “de-transgender” a person, the word they mean is “de-humanize.” That is exactly what these bills would do to kids by removing access to safe and life-affirming medical care, and forcing them to use a restroom that doesn't align with their gender identity. Legislators in Montgomery need to get out of my doctor’s office and out of my kid's school bathroom and leave medical and other private decisions to be made between my family and our medical providers. The truth is, we should help empower our kids to learn and decide for themselves and make New Hampshire schools places where kids are all free to thrive. HB1431 would give a parent the final word on their child's health, education, and welfare – even if it meant the child was put at risk or danger. HB1431 would allow parents to poison their children without recourse, or force their kids into unethical so-called "conversion therapy", or prevent children from reaching out to trusted adults in the community. Parents have rights – and so do children. Children have the right to a safe, healthy, and supportive environment, and to receive a strong education that prepares them to meet the challenges of the future. Parents have a responsibility to provide their children with the family support, healthy environments, and robust education they need, and our community has a responsibility to ensure children are cared for in a safe and loving way. Parents already have ample rights enumerated in law – as the NH Department of Education stated in the House bill analysis.
