Contact your representatives and tell them to vote YES on the SAFETY Act! AB1955, the SAFETY Act, will ban harmful forced outing policies in California schools and ensure that parents and educators have the resources they need to support LGBTQ+ students. Thank you to the 19 California chapters who endorsed the SAFETY Act! Now, let’s keep up the pressure by urging your representatives to vote YES!

New Hampshirites: 

Tell Governor Sununu to VETO anti-LGBTQ+ bills! The legislature passed several harmful bills, including an anti-trans athlete ban and a “Don’t Say LGBTQ+” bill. Tell Governor Sununu to protect LGBTQ+ kids and VETO these bills!

State Matters

Colorado - State GOP sends email, tweet demonizing Pride. The email’s harmful subject line —and an equally harmful followup tweet—prompted widespread criticism from members of both parties. 

Minnesota - Rally held at high school to support trans student attacked at school bathroom. Dozens attended the rally in support of a transgender girl at the school, who was called a slur before being attacked outside of a school bathroom. Police are investigating the incident as a possible hate crime.

Federal Matters

President Biden honors Pride Month. The President issued a Proclamation on May 31st calling out “dangerous and hateful anti-LGBTQ+ laws” and re-affirming the Administration’s commitment to LGBTQ+ equality. The Administration also debuted new resources via the White House LGBTQ+ Community Safety Partnership.

President Biden and Equality Caucus condemn anti-LGBTQ+ policy riders in appropriations bill. The President announced he would veto the House version of the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies (“MilCon”) Appropriations Act of 2025 due to anti-LGBTQ and anti-abortion policy riders, which would reverse the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ policy of covering abortions in cases of rape or incest, prohibit the use of appropriated funds for gender-affirming care, and would block the implementation of three executive orders containing LGBTQ-inclusive diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. 

Council for Global Equality criticizes executive order limiting asylum. President Biden released an executive order prohibiting migrants from seeking asylum in the U.S. if they “unlawfully” cross the Southern border. The Council for Global Equality (of which PFLAG National is a member) and other LGBTQ+ rights groups criticized the the order, saying it is “catastrophic for LGBTQI+ asylum seekers and other asylum seekers from vulnerable populations.”

Resolution introduced to overturn Biden administration Title IX rule. Rep. Mary Miller (IL-15) is the lead sponsor of a resolution to overturn the Education Department’s new Title IX rule, which would—for the first time—expand Title IX protections against sex discrimination in education to cover discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity for the first time.

Global Matters

Chile - Chamber of Deputies rejects nondiscrimination reforms. The reforms, aimed at strengthening non-discrimination protections, including for LGBTQ+ Chileans, failed by a vote of 69-63. 

Georgia - Parliament debates anti-LGBTQ+ bill. The bill that bans "LGBT propaganda" and gender affirming surgery. 

Mexico - Claudia Sheinbaum elected president. Sheinbaum is the first woman and the first Jewish person to be elected President of Mexico. Prior to her election, Sheinbaum released a policy paper that reiterated her support for LGBTQ+ rights in Mexico.

Media Matters

Paul Kuntzler re-stages historic protest for gay rights in front of the White House. Kuntzler held a sign in front of the White House which read “Fifteen Million U.S. Homosexuals Protest Federal Treatment” — re-enacting a protest he participated in 59 years ago. Kuntzler is the last of the ten original participants from 1965 who is still alive.

New biography to be released chronicling life of openly gay reporter. Randy Shilts was the first openly gay person to write for the San Francisco Chronicle. He also wrote numerous books about the gay community, including The Mayor of Castro Street, a biography about Harvey Milk. 

Oprah shares tribute to her brother for Pride Month. Oprah posted the tribute on her website as well as on instagram, honoring her brother, Jeffrey Lee, who died of AIDS-related illness in 1989.

First transgender woman crowned Miss Maryland USA. Bailey Anne is the first openly trans woman, the first Asian-American, and the first military spouse to hold the title.
