This week’s edition of Policy Matters is abbreviated, as PFLAG National staff are attending an in-person, all-staff retreat in Washington, DC.  We look forward to returning next week with a full update.

Settlement reached in lawsuit over Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law. The settlement, which was submitted on March 11th to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, makes clear that the law doesn't bar Florida teachers from making references to LGBTQ+ people and issues. The settlement also makes clear that the law does not ban LGBTQ+ student groups, guarantees anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people in schools, and reinforces anti-bullying measures.

  • HB 47 is a direct attack on anti-discrimination ordinances, which have protected Kentuckians at the local level for 25 years. Tell your lawmakers to protect fairness and vote NO on HB 47!
  • SB 147 is a drag ban that targets Kentucky's small businesses and threatens free speech and expression. The bill is so broad that it could falsely categorize any number of small businesses into "adult oriented businesses," including karaoke bars, theaters, restaurants that host performers, comedy clubs, and more. Tell your legislators to vote NO on SB 147!

  • Decision makers are preparing to reconvene to discuss the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OHMAS) and Ohio Department of Health (ODH) rules concerning gender-affirming care. These regulations represent unwanted, unnecessary, and unconstitutional interference in transgender people’s lives. They constitute extreme government overreach and contradict ethical principles, standards of care, and established medical practices. Among our concerns are:
    • Extensive data collection, which includes adults, and
    • The legacy clause for current care, which seemingly applies only to initiating physicians before a specified date.
    • Moreover, the restrictions on inpatient care and the potential for forced detransition are alarming and unacceptable.
  • It is imperative that we rally together to assert our voices with unwavering strength. Over 4,000 comments have been submitted in the last month - let’s keep the pressure up!

  • Lawmakers are still trying to pass H. 4624, the trans youth healthcare ban. We know many of you must have questions about the bill and how it could impact the community if it passes. So SC United is hosting a Town Hall on March 19th to explain the implications of this bill, share impactful ways to fight back before the Senate vote, and preview resources available to continue receiving care if the bill does pass. Please sign up to attend this important Town Hall event!
