Dear Friend,

The legislature passed SB99 yesterday, which would ban medically necessary care for trans youth and criminalize doctors for providing evidence-based, best-practice care for their transgender patients. Governor Gianforte must veto this bill.

He needs to hear that Montanans care about the safety and well-being of their kids. He needs to hear that Montana parents don’t want politicians in Helena getting between them and the critical, life-saving, and best-practice care doctors have been providing trans youth in this state for years.

Contact Governor Gianforte today and tell him to VETO SB99.

In solidarity,

Patrick

Talking points below:

  • The state should not be meddling in my family’s medical decisions. This bill takes away my right as a parent to make medical decisions for my family in consultation with our doctor. The bill would force providers to go against the existing professional guidelines for medically necessary health care.
  • Every major, trusted medical association – from the American Medical Association to the American Academy of Pediatrics to the World Health Organization – endorses these guidelines for age-appropriate care for transgender people.
  • No health care provider should face criminal or civil lawsuits or penalties because they are complying with practice guidelines for care. These evidence-based guidelines exist to protect and help patients and providers and have been well-established for years.
  • Getting the best standards of care and evidence-based treatment possible for your medical needs shouldn’t be limited, and certainly not barred, by discriminatory politicians. It’s a dangerous precedent and history already tells us where this leads.
