Looking to tackle an important task for your chapter's annual responsibilities before the new year? Ensure you file your chapter's IRS forms! It's a crucial requirement, and every chapter must submit a report to the IRS by February 15, 2024. Most chapters with an annual income under $50,000 can use the e-Postcard (990-N), but if your income exceeds $50,000, visit irs.gov/990n for more details. Filing yearly is vital, as your chapter could lose its tax-exempt status if you fail to file for three consecutive years. For those filing the e-Postcard (990-N), follow these simple steps: - Visit the IRS 990-N filing page.
- Review the provided information and click "Submit 990-N (e-Postcard button)" when ready.
- Sign in with Login.gov using your username and password from previous years. If you're a new chapter, you might need to create an account. Avoid signing in with the ID.me option, as it's tied to your personal Social Security Number, not the chapter's EIN.
- Enter the required information:
- Your chapter’s employer identification number (EIN)
- Tax year
- Legal name and mailing address of the chapter
- Any other names the organization uses
- Name and address of a principal officer or person filing
- Website address if the organization has one
- Confirmation that the organization's annual gross receipts are $50,000 or less (yes/no answer)
- If applicable, a statement that the organization has terminated or is terminating (going out of business)
- After filing, save a copy of the confirmation page for your records. To ensure your submission was accepted, log back into the IRS system after about 10 minutes.
