Dear Chapter Leader,

Can you believe that we’re just two weeks away from June? Pride festivities will start for many of us very soon—even as many of you are grappling with continued anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and harm online and in your communities. It can be challenging to center #LeadingWithLove, so I want to remind you that we have several supporting resources to set you up for success including training centered on leading with love, safety planning resources, and timely messaging topics

We also encourage you to check out this week’s episode of “Something to Talk About Live” (details below) for a very special conversation with nonbinary author and influencer Jeffrey Marsh—it is absolutely sure to inspire.

Thank you for all that you do,
Shaun Connors (he/they),
Chapter Engagement Manager

One Hour A Week to Branding Success

In last week’s issue of Leadership Learnings we continued the One Hour A Week to Branding Success series, a seven-week strategy to do low-lift branding tasks that will take no more than an hour of your time. Last week’s task focused on updating your chapter logo on social media! You can see the entire series by first logging into the Chapter Leader Web Portal at chapterleaders.pflag.org (using the login info below) and then visiting pflag.org/newsletters

Week 6: Update Your Chapter Name Everywhere!

Your chapter’s name is every bit as important as your visuals, logo, and messaging when it comes to branding. It’s imperative to make sure that everyone—from your board to your members to your community and partners—is using the same name for your chapter, to ensure visibility and clarity.

Every chapter name starts with “PFLAG”, follows with a city or approved region, and does not include the word “chapter” at the end. You should also ensure that you and everyone with whom you work or partner knows that PFLAG is a word, not an acronym.

Chapter names are selected and confirmed at the time of a chapter's founding, and while some chapter names might change over time, all name changes should be confirmed with your PFLAG National Chapter Engagement staffer before they are made, to ensure the changes comply with chapter-naming guidelines. We have processes and paperwork in place to change your chapter’s name as needed and instructions available to support changes at a state level. If this is of interest, please reach out to your Chapter Engagement staffer

What to do with your hour:

  1. Refer to your spreadsheet or list from week 1 to find the places where your chapter is visible.
  2. Visit each platform that’s maintained by your chapter and verify, change, or update your chapter’s name to reflect the name you used to create your logo.
  3. Don’t forget to save your changes and updates so they reflect the work you’re putting into this project!
  4. Next, reach out to the organizations, entities, or people who maintain places where your chapter name is listed but not under your control and request that they change your name to reflect the correct name, including correcting and updating any places where the old acronym still appears..

Did you complete this task? SUCCESS! You’re done for the week.

Extra credit: Make social media posts or a special email blast celebrating the changes

You’ve been doing great work so far, if you’ve got some extra time please take a moment to uplift your hard work! Making a post to social media or your mailing list noting the ongoing branding efforts of your chapter and providing great visibility to your new brand, just in time for Pride.

Affirming and Celebrating Ourselves

As we discover more about how we relate to the world around us it is easy to shy away from change, and forget to prioritize our needs. It is in those moments that the way we feel about ourselves, and the unconditional love of our parents, family members, friends, and allies can quite literally save our lives.

Join us this Thursday, May 18th for Something to Talk About Live!

PFLAG Academy Online: May 2023

May 31, 2023 | 8:30pm ET/5:30pm PT: When Someone Comes Out: Supporting and Affirming Our LGBTQ+ Loved Ones

The term “coming out” has become so mainstream that many people assume that the word—and the actions it entails—are simple. However, PFLAG members and supporters know that it can still be a harrowing for individuals and families. This learning session, updated for 2023, has great tips, tools, and ideas for those who want to support people who are LGBTQ+ that are planning to come out, while acknowledging that the experience is different for everyone. It will also provide recommendations for new (and potential) allies who want to demonstrate their support for the LGBTQ folks in their lives.
