Dear PFLAG Supporter,

We have a long fight ahead of us in the coming years, and we know that many of you are holding the weight of this as the legislative season begins. We don’t want to sugar coat things - there will be losses and hardships, grief and anger. We’re going to have to protect our families and protect our well being. On the Chapter and Communities Engagement team, the phrase “It’s a marathon, not a sprint” has been coming up a lot.

But a marathon is a great analogy for what we’re gearing up for this year. It’s going to be long, and we might feel defeated along the way. The wins might not feel big. Yet, after a year of building relationships with lawmakers, standing up for our loved ones and ourselves, taking care of each other in times of need, and surviving - we’ll look back and see just how much we’ve accomplished. We’re going to need resources, cheerleaders, and stamina, but we will finish this marathon stronger.

As you’re thinking about how you’ll run this marathon, consider watching the newest PFLAG Academy Online Session Advocacy at All Levels: Making Your PFLAG Voice Heard to learn how to advocate effectively for LGBTQ+ issues at the local, state, and federal levels. Keep up to date on issues affecting our community by signing up for Policy Matters, As always, if you have specific advocacy follow up questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to our team at advocacy@pflag.org

Above all: be well, take care of one another, and please continue to keep us informed of what’s going on in your community.

Rural Think Tank Alert!

Rural PFLAG chapters often are faced with the challenge of how to successfully outreach to and engage their communities in order to sustain and grow their chapters. If this has been a struggle or success story for your rural chapter, or if you’re wondering how to get started with community and member outreach and engagement, January’s facilitated peer-led discussion is for you! Register for the next Rural Think Tank tonight at 5pm PT / 8pm ET.

Regional/Resilience Roundup

As we head into this year’s legislative session, please keep chapter safety planning and self care at the forefront of your minds! We have a new Chapter Safety section on the Chapter Leader Portal with all of our available safety resources, and includes important notes for prioritizing self care as a PFLAG chapter leader. We also have publicly available safety resources for chapter members to share with your networks! Our team will be adding more to this section of the Member Portal, so stay tuned and let us know if there’s a resource you need for your chapter that you’re not finding.

Stay safe,

Abby Shuler (she/her)
