Dear PFLAG Supporter,

With the new administration pumping out executive orders meant to harm our communities, Congress being back in session, and many state legislatures reconvening across the country, advocacy efforts are heating up. PFLAG National is here to support you with critical resources designed to equip you with the information and tools you need to effectively advocate for LGBTQ+ people and those who love them.

  • You likely saw the announcement of PFLAG v. Trump, a lawsuit filed on behalf of PFLAG National, GLMA, and two transgender young adults and five transgender adolescents and their families whose healthcare has been disrupted by President Trump’s executive order banning gender-affirming medical care.
    • If you or a member have questions, your first stop is to check the public-facing PFLAG v Trump FAQs to see if the question is responded to there. This link and the information in it can be shared widely.
    • If your question is NOT answered there, next check the password-protected FAQ for chapter leaders only.
    • If the question you have is not in either of those documents, please reach out to eolegal@pflag.org; this will loop in the appropriate team of people. Please note: PFLAG National staff and RDs will NOT be able to answer any questions beyond what is in the two FAQs linked above. Sending your questions to the above email address is the only way to receive answers beyond the FAQs.
    • For detailed information on other issues such as passports and identity documents, K-12 education, transgender military support, and more, visit our recently launched, detailed page of explainers and resources for Trump executive orders. This page is updated frequently as we gather information from our many trusted coalition partners, so that you can use it to inform your activism and advocacy and share it with your chapter and community.
    • If you or someone in your chapter or community needs to report a situation regarding a loved one’s care, please report that to Lambda Legal’s Help Desk directly at lambdalegal.org/helpdesk/
  • We’ve launched Advocacy in 10 Minutes Or Less, a series of bite-sized videos with information and training to advocate. We’ve started our series with tips on how to predict a bill’s future and best practices for attending public meetings, with more videos coming on writing effective letters to lawmakers, 501(c)(3) dos and don'ts, and issue-specific explainers.

As always, if you have any advocacy-related questions, contact the Advocacy team at advocacy@pflag.org. They are here to help!

Annual Responsibilities

The deadline for this year’s Annual Responsibilities is quickly approaching! All submissions are due by Saturday, February 15, 2025—just a few days away.

If you haven’t started yet, please prioritize completing the IRS 990-N e-postcard and your state’s required filings. You can find a full guide, including links and visual walkthroughs, here.

If you’ve already completed your IRS and state filings, please begin working on your annual report for PFLAG National. This report is required each year to help provide financial and other information that supports our IRS reporting and data evaluation. You can complete the report here.

If you need help completing these tasks, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Angel Kearns at akearns@pflag.org. Additionally, she’ll be hosting two final office hours, which you can join if you need assistance. Registration links are provided below.

Thursday, February 13, 2025 @ 7pm EST (6 CST; 5 MST; 4 PST)

Saturday, February 15, 2025 @ 11am EST (10 CST; 9 MST; 8 PST)

Urban Think Tank Alert!

Urban PFLAG chapters have unique opportunities and challenges, including lots of chances to host events-- fundraisers, anniversary parties, holiday parties, social events, and more. The advantage of being in a city is that there are many potential attendees, partners, spaces, and ways to generate engagement.

If this is something your chapter has succeeded in, wanted to focus on, or needs guidance on, register for the next Urban Think Tank to take part in a facilitated discussion peer support space specifically for urban chapter leaders. Register to attend on Wednesday, February 19th at 4pm PT / 7pm ET.

Resilience Roundup

As political and social community environments change across the country and PFLAG chapters are learning to adapt, I want to offer you the opportunity to potentially connect with another PFLAG chapter elsewhere in the country for mutual learning and support.  At our core, PFLAG is a grassroots organization strongly rooted in community connections and visibility and, in these difficult times, solidarity is more important than ever! Please reach out if you’re interested in being connected to another chapter in a different region who may be far away but dealing with or already having dealt with similar situations to yours.

Stay safe,

Shaun Connors (he/they)
