PFLAG Connects

Dear PFLAGer:

In March, PFLAG National made the historic decision to temporarily suspend all in-person support group meetings for the first time in our nearly 50-year history. But not being in the same physical space doesn’t mean PFLAGers aren’t supporting their communities. As of this past week, we’re happy to report that PFLAG Connects—the system that helps bring PFLAG chapters online to provide virtual support—surpassed the 100-chapter mark! If you’re looking for support in your community, check in with your local chapter to see if virtual help is available.

Also, if you missed our past Something to Talk About Live broadcasts, you can watch them now on Facebook or YouTube.

Three Steps to Being...A Better Communicator (While You’re Stuck at Home)

Just because you’re staying in doesn’t mean your communication skills should slow down. So, stay safe and take these steps to engage:

  1. Learn: Check out pflag.org/our-story to help you learn more about PFLAG’s nearly 50-year history so that you can talk with others about our story, mission, and values no matter where you are on your communications journey.
  2. Watch: PFLAG Academy On Demand includes multiple sessions for those who would like to better communicate their support for LGBTQ+ equality. You can also check out our brand new Advocacy in an Election Year: Leveraging Traditional Media which will help you better understand the many ways PFLAG members and supporters communicate PFLAG’s values.
  3. Share: Use social media to let your networks know that you’re going to participate in Something to Talk About Live on Facebook or YouTube this Thursday at 4:30 PM ET / 1:30 PM PT.

Reminder: #DecisionDay: Title VII at the Supreme Court

On October 8, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments for three cases concerning existing protections LGBTQ+ people have in employment and how Title VII’s ban on workplace sex discrimination protects them from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. The outcome of these cases will determine whether workers who LGBTQ+ will continue to be protected under our nation's federal civil rights laws. The Court will issue its decisions any time between now and the end of June. Visit decisionday.org to learn more about the cases and what’s at stake

On the day of the decision--which will come in at 10am ET--a live virtual rally will be held, featuring inspiring speakers from across the country weighing in on what the decisions mean for them. PFLAG National is proud to lead on the Coordinating Committee for the live #DecisionDay rally along with our friends at the LGBTQ Task Force and the National Equality Action Team (NEAT) - and we want you to join us! RSVP now to hear speakers from across the country weigh in at 7pm ET/4pm PT on Decision Day.

Something to Talk About...Live!

Join PFLAG National live this Thursday, May 7th at 4:30 PM ET/1:30 PM PT for Something to Talk About Live, when we'll continue our conversation about banned books! We’d planned on having author Lesléa Newman with us last week, but due to technical issues, she wasn’t able to join us. So this week, we'll be talking in-depth with Lesléa about writing inclusively, experiencing protest, and looking at the shape of youth literature. You can watch live on Facebook or YouTube.

You can get the link to this week’s article and check out our discussion questions by visiting http://www.straightforequality.org/something-to-talk-about-live-may-7-2020.

Remember: We're here to help. Find us all at pflag.org/about/our-people.

Let’s stay safe, stay healthy--and stay connected.

We're here for you,

Team PFLAG National

P.S. Be sure to follow us on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram for even more connecting! And remember that all PFLAG National publications are always available to download for free at pflag.org/publications.
