PFLAG Connects

Dear PFLAGer:

We’ve got brand-new ways to stay connected this week, including another edition of Something to Talk About LIVE. Did you miss our past broadcasts? You can watch them now on Facebook or YouTube.

PFLAG Connects: Meeting where you are.

Reminder: PFLAG Connects you with your local chapter and the LGBTQ+ community

Earlier this month, we launched PFLAG Connects, bringing the PFLAG Chapter Network online to provide digital meetings and events to local communities, families, and LGBTQ+ loved ones. Have you joined a PFLAG Connects meeting yet? No time like the present! Find your local chapter here, then reach out via email, phone, and social media and follow them for updates on virtual meetings and events. Unable to connect that way? Reach out to the staff at PFLAG National for help getting connected.

Three Steps to Being...Supportive When Someone Comes Out (While You’re Stuck at Home)

Just because you’re staying in doesn’t mean the need for support, acceptance, and affirmation has slowed down. So, stay safe and take these steps to engage:

  1. Learn: Check out the list of books available at pflag.org/comingoutbooks to learn more about the diversity of coming-out and disclosure experiences for LGBTQ+ individuals and their loved ones.
  2. Watch: PFLAG Academy Online On-Demand includes When Someone Comes Out: A PFLAGers Guide to Demonstrating Support and Acceptance and there are many individuals and families that share their stories on Tumblr, Facebook, and YouTube in the hope of providing support to others who are just beginning their coming-out journey.
  3. Share: Use social media to share PFLAG publications such as Our Children and Our Trans Loved Ones (también disponible en español!) as well as information about how to find a local PFLAG chapter for parents and families looking for more information after a loved one has come out.

#DecisionDay: Title VII at the Supreme Court

On October 8, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments for three cases concerning existing protections LGBTQ+ people have in employment and how Title VII’s ban on workplace sex discrimination protects them from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. The outcome of these cases will determine whether workers who LGBTQ+ will continue to be protected under our nation's federal civil rights laws. The Court will issue its decisions any time between now and the end of June. Visit decisionday.org to learn more about the cases and what’s at stake

On the day of the decision--which will come in at 10am ET--a live virtual rally will be held, featuring inspiring speakers from across the country weighing in on what the decisions mean for them. PFLAG National is proud to lead on the Coordinating Committee for the live #DecisionDay rally along with our friends at the LGBTQ Task Force and the National Equality Action Team (NEAT) - and we want you to join us! RSVP now to hear speakers from across the country weigh in at 7pm ET/4pm PT on Decision Day.

Something to Talk About...Live!

Join PFLAG National live this Thursday, April 30th at 4:30 PM ET/1:30 PM PT when we'll be talking with award-winning author Lesléa Newman ("Heather Has Two Mommies") and PFLAG National Director of Communications Liz Owen. You can watch live on Facebook or YouTube.

We’ll be talking about banned books in libraries, since the American Library Association released its list of the 10 books that received the most challenges in libraries in 2019. What do they all have in common -- and what should you do?

You can get the link to this week’s article and check out our discussion questions by visiting http://www.straightforequality.org/something-to-talk-about-live-april-30-2020.

Remember: We're here to help. Find us all at pflag.org/about/our-people.

We're here for you,

Team PFLAG National
